We need to embark on a path of “more nutrition per drop” along with “more crop per drop.” The food habits are changing by the year and generation. While the generation is asking for more nutrition we are debating on supporting and producing more rice, more wheat and sugar. When the consumer is becoming more aware of health hygiene, food safety we fail to provide a choice of horticulture and agriculture produce to them.
Food Safety Standard and Authority of India (FSSAI) has published standards for horticulture produce with respect to food safety. But we need to educate our farmers, supply chain service providers and ensure it stays relevant and protects consumer health.
We must rise above, think about agriculture and “Nutritional Security” of India beyond 2030 and feeding estimated 1.64 Bn people with changed food habits in 2050. The demand for nutrition will be far greater than now. Think about what we want to give to our next and the next generations?
